Consultant Neuropsychiatrist
Professor Shapiro is a recognised world expert in the field
of Sleep and Neuropsychiatric Disorders. He graduated cum
laude from The University of Witwatersrand, South Africa,
with dual qualifications in Science and Medicine. Subsequent
to this he moved to Edinburgh where he completed his PhD
in Sleep Medicine.
During this time, and whilst obtaining his Membership
of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, he set up the first
sleep research unit in Johannesburg, South Africa –
The Wits Sleep Lab – which is still a vibrant academic
hub. He was instrumental in setting up, and is a founder
member of The British sleep Society.
In 1992, Colin was appointed as Professor of Neuropsychiatry
and Sleep Disorders at The University of Toronto, Canada.
He has established 3 sleep centres in Ontario. He has published
widely in the scientific literature and has authored and
edited numerous books and chapters. He is the chairman of
the International Neuropsychiatry Association and on the
editorial board of several other peer reviewed publications.
